Chinese has never been my forte back in school. In fact I did not pass my Chinese Oral exams back in secondary school. Don't get me wrong. I can communicate in Chinese. However my written words for Chinese had been my bearbug.


Thus, it is no surprise that I am completely clueless when it comes to educating my boys Chinese. During a revision in Chinese with Big C for his Primary one school, I was stumped when he asked me to read his text. At the end of Primary school, Big C probably would have a better Chinese Vocabulary than I did. Thus when a request from Wild Crane Press came to review a Chinese book for kids, I was at two minds in accepting this 'challenge'.

My Home Series 我的家 is a set of two books consisting of a bilingual picture book and an accompanying activity book. This story revolves around Jason who explores every room in his HDB flat to find a playmate. Since this story is the first locally produced picture book, the content is relevant and recognizable to the boys.

Personally, the lift the flap tabs in the book are a good way to introduce words in both Chinese and English to the children. As Little Lou is still a little apprehensive on learning, a colourful book with these mini activities will be able to captured his attention. The use of bilingual language along with Hanyu Pinyin ensures that even a Chinese novice like me would be confident to pick up this book and read with my boy.

The activity book comes with vocabulary exercises that derived its lessons from the main book.

In addition it comes with mini activities such as making a DIY doorknob sign, a mini game, stickers and even words cutout which will be useful in revising the words learned from the main book. There is even a certificate for the child once the activity book is completed.

Since learning is best taught with a little bit of play for the younger ones, I think that this series will be a hit. Thus it is no surprise that this is a best seller in Wild Crane Press.
